ACR Copper Tube vs Plumbing Copper Pipe: Key Differences
ACR copper tube vs plumbing copper pipe: compare cleanliness, sizing, pressure rating and use. Learn which one your AC or fridge needs and get expert help.
If you are comparing ACR copper tube vs plumbing copper pipe, the short version is this: both are copper, but they are made, sized and supplied for different jobs. ACR tube is for air conditioning and refrigeration circuits. Plumbing pipe is for water and gas lines. You can often tell them apart only by the label, so it helps to know what to ask for.

Same metal. Different duty. Check before you buy.ACR copper tube vs plumbing copper pipe: the short answer
Use ACR tube for refrigerant lines in split ACs, VRF systems, cold rooms and refrigerators. Use plumbing pipe for water and gas lines. If you are brazing a refrigerant circuit, buy tube sold for refrigeration use and check its wall thickness against the equipment maker’s manual.
The differences that matter on site are:
- Intended use. One is made for refrigerant circuits, the other for water and gas.
- Sizing system. ACR tube is named by its real outside diameter. Plumbing pipe can follow a different size standard, so its label may not match ACR sizes.
- Cleanliness. Refrigeration tube is expected to have a clean, dry bore. A refrigerant circuit has little tolerance for moisture or debris.
- Form. Soft coils are common for AC work. Straight lengths are common for plumbing and larger lines.
What is ACR copper tube?
ACR stands for air conditioning and refrigeration. It is copper tube made for carrying refrigerant between the compressor, condenser, expansion device and evaporator.
In a split AC, the two copper lines between the indoor and outdoor unit are ACR tube. One carries liquid refrigerant and the other carries suction gas. Sizes are given as outside diameter, such as 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch.
ACR tube comes in two forms:
- Soft-drawn coils. You bend these by hand or with a bender, which suits AC line sets and short runs with few joints.
- Hard-drawn straight lengths. These hold their shape, suit longer exposed runs and larger diameters, and are brazed at each joint.
At Refrigeration Centre, the ACR sizes used most, 1/4 inch to 2-1/8 inch, are held on the shelf. Other diameters and wall thicknesses can be sourced on order. You can see the full range on our copper pipe page.
What is plumbing copper pipe?
Plumbing copper pipe carries water, and in some installations gas. It is usually sold as straight lengths, and it can follow a different size standard from ACR tube, so the size on the label may not match the ACR size you need. Measure the outside diameter and wall thickness before you buy.
That naming habit is the most common cause of ordering mistakes. A refrigeration tube called 1/2 inch measures 1/2 inch outside. A plumbing pipe with the same name may not. If you mix the two, your fittings will not fit.
Refrigeration Centre also supplies hard-drawn straight lengths for heat pumps, medical gas, and gas and water lines, in multiple wall thicknesses. If your job is one of these, say so when you ask for a quote, so we can match the length and wall thickness to it.
Key differences: cleanliness, sizing and sold lengths
Here is how the two compare in practice.
| Point | ACR copper tube | Plumbing copper pipe |
|---|---|---|
| Main use | Refrigerant lines | Water and gas lines |
| Size naming | Actual outside diameter | Check OD and wall |
| Interior | Should be clean and dry | Not made with refrigerant in mind |
| Common form | Soft coils and straight lengths | Mostly straight lengths |
| Wall thickness | Chosen for the system and refrigerant | Chosen for the line duty |
Cleanliness
Moisture and dirt inside a refrigerant line cause trouble. Water can freeze at the expansion device or react with oil and refrigerant. Debris can block a filter drier or damage a compressor. This is why refrigeration tube is expected to arrive clean and dry, usually with the ends closed. Whatever you buy, keep the ends capped until you are ready to braze, and do not open a coil early.
Sizing and sold lengths
Our standard coils are 50 ft (15.24 m) and our straight lengths are 10 ft (3.05 m). Soft-drawn coils cover OD 1.5 to 28.6 mm. Hard-drawn straight lengths cover OD 3 to 150 mm. In sizes from 1/4 to 7/8 inch you can choose coil or straight.
You do not have to buy a full length. We cut to size down to 1 ft, and coil is sold by the metre. Pricing can be per kg, per coil or per metre depending on quantity.
Pressure rating and wall thickness for refrigerant systems
Wall thickness is what lets a tube hold pressure. A thicker wall handles more, but it costs more per metre, weighs more and is harder to bend. The right wall depends on the refrigerant, the operating pressures and the tube diameter.
Newer refrigerants such as R410A run at higher pressures than R22. A line set that was fine for an older system may not suit a newer one. Do not guess from the diameter alone. Read the equipment maker’s manual, which decides the wall thickness and size for that unit. Our guidance is general, and the manual overrides it.
If you want to compare wall thickness and weight per metre, the copper pipe weight and thickness chart is a useful reference. For sizing a split AC, see the AC copper pipe size guide.
We do not state pressure ratings or certifications for any tube, so ask the maker’s documentation. If you need a mill test certificate, we can arrange one on special request.
Can you use plumbing copper pipe for an AC or refrigerator?
It is a bad idea to treat the two as interchangeable. Even when the metal is the same, you cannot be sure of three things:
- The bore is clean and dry. Plumbing pipe is not made with a refrigerant circuit in mind.
- The wall suits the pressure. You have to check this against the unit’s manual.
- The size matches your fittings. A different size standard can leave you with a pipe that does not fit your flare nuts or copper fittings.
If you are converting a gas or water job to a refrigerant job, or the other way round, order for the actual duty. Tell us which one it is when you ask for a quote.
Joints matter as much as the tube. Brazing refrigerant lines well takes clean cuts, a nitrogen purge and the right rods. Our brazing guide walks through it. We stock copper, brass and silver brazing rods, flux and butane under consumables, and copper fittings from 1/8 inch to 4-1/8 inch, along with brass fittings.
Cost comparison and how to choose the right one
We do not publish prices, so we cannot give you a figure here. What we can tell you is what moves the cost: diameter, wall thickness, brand, and whether you buy by the kg, the coil or the metre. Thicker walls and larger diameters cost more.
The cheaper-looking option is not always the right one. A mistake in a refrigerant circuit can mean evacuating, replacing tube and recharging. The saving on tube is small next to that.
To choose, work through these steps:
- Write down the job: refrigerant line, water line, gas line or medical gas.
- Check the unit’s manual for the outside diameter and wall thickness.
- Decide on coil or straight length, based on run length and bends.
- Count the metres or coils, and add some for cuts and mistakes.
- Pick the brand. We deal in Nippon, Classic, RR, Mexflow, Hindalco, Mandev, Rajco, Totaline, Hari Om, MPCL and Indigo.

Frequently asked questions
Is ACR copper tube the same as plumbing pipe?
No. Both are copper, but ACR tube is made for refrigerant circuits and is sized by its actual outside diameter. Plumbing pipe is made for water and gas and may follow a different size standard, so check its OD and wall.
Can I use plumbing pipe on a split AC?
We would not advise it. You cannot be sure the bore is clean and dry, and the wall must suit the refrigerant pressure in the manual. Buy tube meant for refrigeration work.
Which ACR sizes does Refrigeration Centre hold?
The ACR sizes most used, 1/4 inch to 2-1/8 inch, are held on the shelf. Other diameters and wall thicknesses can be sourced on order.
Do you sell copper pipe by the metre?
Yes. Coil is sold by the metre, and we cut to size down to 1 ft. Pricing can be per kg, per coil or per metre depending on quantity.
Do you install the pipework?
No. We supply parts only. We do not do installation, AMC or service work.
